Additional Notes on This Survey
- Please base your ratings on how you would compare each album to the other Pet Shop Boys albums in this poll—not to other artists' albums in general. (Barring unforeseen problems or something more pressing coming up in the "PSB universe," I'm planning on running a similar poll that lets you compare these albums to those of the pop music industry in general next week.)
- Please use the following guidelines for your album ratings:
This is the default setting. Use this if you're not familiar with the album—or at least not familiar enough to be comfortable giving it a rating—or if you're unwilling to rate it for any other reason.
- 0 stars (a "bomb")
An album that's essentially devoid of merit as far as you're concerned—utterly beneath the Pet Shop Boys and barely worth your attention. If you own it, the only reason you own it is because you're a dedicated PSB fan. But you hardly ever listen to it, if at all.
- 1 star
A poor, disappointing album by PSB standards, though not completely devoid of merit. Although it's seriously flawed in certain ways, you do listen to it now and then.
- 2 stars
A slightly below-average album for PSB—mildly disappointing in some way, but nevertheless well worth owning and listening to on a fairly regular basis, especially if you're a fan. It's really not a "bad" album, but it's not quite up to their usual standards, either.
- 3 stars
An average PSB album, which means it's good—just not especially good by their standards. You listen to it often and find it quite enjoyable, although there may be something about it that rubs you a little the wrong way, such as a few songs that you routinely skip. Still, the positives definitely outweigh the negatives.
- 4 stars
Above average for PSB—undoubtedly one of their better albums. You listen to it quite often and truly enjoy all or very nearly all of its songs. And, perhaps unlike some of the lower-rated albums, it holds together well, working as a whole. Nevertheless, it lacks a certain quality that would enable it to rise to the highest level of 5 stars.
- 5 stars
A truly great PSB album—one of their very best, an absolute classic, showing them at the pinnacle of their art. In essence, it exemplifies their greatness. By the very nature of this rating as meaning "the best of PSB," it should be reserved for only a few of their albums: no more than three or four of them, tops. (To be blunt, if you give a 5-star rating to more than half of the albums, I'm going to throw your submission out because by assigning it to so many, you've fundamentally rendered it meaningless. Next week, when I'm planning on running a similar survey in which you compare PSB albums to those of other artists, is when having a far larger number of 5-star ratings becomes more logical and meaningful.)
